Your health data is yours. Maren is built so that we never see it.
| Data | Where it is stored | Who can access it |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle, period, symptom, mood, and related entries you log | Your device only (local storage; never iCloud/CloudKit) | Only you. Not us. Not third parties. |
| App settings & preferences | Your device | Only you |
| Purchase / subscription status | Apple (StoreKit); entitlement state is cached locally by Maren | Apple and you; the developer does not collect payment details or entitlement status on a server |
We do not collect your name, email, phone number, contacts, precise location, or advertising identifier. Maren has no analytics and no user accounts.
If you choose to connect Apple Health, you select the individual data types Maren may access. Maren can read and write menstrual flow, body mass, basal body temperature, and intermenstrual bleeding when you select and authorize those types. Sleep analysis, step count, and Apple Exercise Time are read-only imports: Maren does not write those three types back to Apple Health. HealthKit handles these samples under your Apple Health and Apple ID settings. They are never sent to us, never used for advertising, and never sold. You can disconnect in Settings and manage permissions in the Health app.
If you install the optional Apple Watch companion, Maren uses Apple's WatchConnectivity framework to exchange a local summary and the quick logs you choose between your paired watch and iPhone. The widget uses an App Group to read a local summary on the same iPhone. Neither feature sends health data to us, a developer-operated server, iCloud, or CloudKit.
Today Status, the free Perimenopause 30-day/90-day record summary, Daily Stories, personalized educational cards, trends, correlations, and Premium insights are computed on your device from records you choose to create. Maren does not upload those records to a developer-operated server.
Maren offers an optional monthly auto-renewable subscription, yearly auto-renewable subscription, and one-time purchase (Maren Premium), processed by Apple via StoreKit. Eligible new yearly subscribers may receive Apple's configured seven-day introductory free trial; the yearly subscription then renews automatically unless cancelled. The monthly product has no trial configured in the current product configuration. The lifetime product is a one-time, non-consumable purchase with no renewal. StoreKit provides the app with a verified entitlement state on your device so it can unlock Premium. The developer does not receive or store your name, payment details, or entitlement status on a developer server. Your logging, free Perimenopause record summary, and data export always remain free.
Maren contains no analytics SDK and no third-party tracking or advertising code. The app sends no health data to any developer-operated or third-party server. It uses only Apple platform features: StoreKit, optional HealthKit, local notifications, LocalAuthentication, App Intents/Shortcuts, WidgetKit/App Groups, Files document pickers, and optional paired-device WatchConnectivity. Maren has no backend of its own and does not use iCloud or CloudKit for health data.
Raw CSV/PDF exports and clinician-report PDFs are not encrypted. Maren warns you before creating them. If you continue, iOS shows the system share interface and you decide where to send or save those files.
The optional .marenbackup format is encrypted with a password you choose. The password is used only for that operation and is not stored, uploaded, or recoverable by the developer. You decide where the encrypted file is saved and which encrypted file to import. A Files destination may include local storage or a cloud provider you configured, including iCloud Drive; this is a user-directed file transfer, not automatic Maren or CloudKit synchronization.
Maren is a tracking and insight tool for personal awareness. It is not a contraceptive, not a medical device, and does not provide medical advice or guarantees about fertility, ovulation, or pregnancy prevention. Predictions are estimates and may be inaccurate, especially for irregular cycles. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for medical decisions.
Maren is not directed to children under 13 (under 16 in the EEA/UK). We do not knowingly collect data from them.
At any time, from within the app, you can view your records, export them, create or import an encrypted manual backup, and permanently delete local Maren data. Deleting the app removes its local database. Files you previously exported are controlled by the destination you selected and must be deleted there separately. Because we do not hold your data on our servers, you can fulfil most data-subject requests (GDPR/CCPA access, deletion, portability) yourself, directly in the app. For questions, contact billy.yu@me.com.
We process the minimal data described above to provide the service you request. This policy is designed to align with GDPR (EEA/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California) principles. Where required, health data is treated as sensitive/special-category data and is processed only on your device, with your consent.
We will post any changes here and update the effective date. Material changes will be surfaced in-app.
